Shekhupur is part of Badaun district and one of the six assembly constituencies in Badaun (Lok Sabha constituency). First election in this assembly constituency was held in 2012 after the "Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 2008" was passed and the constituency was formed in 2008, the constituency was assigned identification number as 116. In 2012 the constituency elected SP candidate, Ashish Yadav to power who is contesting again with hopes to win once again based on key development works undertaken by him over the last 5 years.

MLA claim:
He claims that there is not a single villlage without a primary school in his constituency. There are also sufficient junior high schools, a central college, a sugar mill and several medical colleges. He is working towards providing electricity to the villages and has built roads.
Voters Speak:
There are no good schools due to which people are not able to provide good and higher education to their kids.
Due to lack of sanitation workers, cleanliness is not upto the mark.
Despite development in the form of flyovers, roads and medical colleges, the key issues of drainage problems, traffic jams and bad roads have not been addressed.
Samajwadi Party has developed the state by building and maintainiing roads.
