Former world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali is dead. Muhammad Ali died late on Friday at a hospital in the US city of Phoenix, Arizona where he was under treatment for a respiratory ailment.

He had been suffering from a respiratory illness, a condition that was complicated by Parkinson's disease. Even as his health declined, Ali did not shy from politics or controversy, releasing a statement in December criticizing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
In 2005, President George W. Bush honored Ali with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ali's funeral will take place in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, sources said.
