Crime, Corruption Key Worries For Indians: Pew Survey

Crime and corruption are the two biggest problems that worry India, according to the latest survey by Pew Research Centre.

85% of people surveyed said that crime is a “very big problem” while 72% said corruption is a bigger problem. Electricity shortage and poor schools were key concerns for 58% and 57%, respectively. Healthcare, air and water pollution, food safety and traffic rounded up the list.

When asked to rate the key institutions in the country, 86% of those surveyed said military has a “very good influence” in India. The media also received a favourable response as 78% said it has had a positive impact. Religious leaders and civil servants fared very poorly with only 54% respondents choosing them.

 

The Method

 

The 2014 Spring Pew Global Attitudes Survey in India was conducted between April 14 and May 1, 2014 and the results were published on November 6. The sample population included 2,464 adults. The multi-stage cluster sample was stratified by region and urbanity. The survey was conducted in New Delhi and 15 of the 17 most populous states, and was done in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati and Odiya.
