This week film critic Aniruddha Guha reviews Mohit Suri's Hamari Adhuri Kahani. Watch his Dedh Minute Review.
I decided to take a box of Kleenex along to the screening of Hamari Adhuri Kahaani because I thought it would be a tear-jerker. I eventually used them to wipe tears from all the laughing.
But hold on. Even for all the entertainment it accidentally provides, Hamari Adhuri Kahani isn't worth your time, unless you are someone whose life has no meaning. Just like the film’s characters.
Take for example Vidya Balan, a woman so full of sadness, she could give Devdas an inferiority complex. She is married to an extremely misunderstood man, played by Rajkummar Rao, who the makers would like us to believe is the villain of the piece. But when compared to the other guy, he’s a bundle of joy.
The hero, played by Emraan Hashmi, is a sexual harassment suit waiting to happen. He plays Balan’s employer, an hotelier so creepy, it could have been played by Gulshan Grover. He writes her name repeatedly in his free time, and insists on her sending him her selfie for the “hotel magazine”.
Director Mohit Suri tries to repeat the very successful Aashiqui 2 formula again with a melodramatic piece, but while that had at least good music going for it, Hamari Adhuri Kahani is a complete disaster. And you know why? Because the film HAS no script! It’s just a sequence of scenes put together with actors who seem to be paid a lot of money, and technicians who have a lot of free time to waste on a pointless film.
If you are looking at some tear-jerking action this weekend, you'd rather peel an onion. My Dedh Minute Rating is a 1.5/5.
