Dedh Minute Review: The Shaukeens and Rang Rasiya

By - A Staff Writer | 10 Nov 2014 1:43 PM IST

90 seconds is all Aniruddha Guha needs to tell you whether to watch or drop this weekend’s films, The Shaukeens and Rang Rasiya. Watch the review below to find out his verdict.

The Shaukeens

Tere Bin Laden’s Abhishek Sharma directs the Shaukeens, which has been written by Tigmanshu Dhulia. This comedy is a remake of the 1982 film titled Shaukeen. The latter had legendary actors like Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt and A.K. Hangal, who are replaced here by Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra.

All three men lust after Lisa Haydon’s character, Ahana, a girl with a weird fascination for Facebook. Akshay Kumar plays a cameo as himself, and his comic timing will remind you of his other films like Hera Pheri and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

Rang Rasiya

Ketan Mehta’s Rang Rasiya looks at the life of celebrated painter Raja Ravi Varma, who is played by Randeep Hooda. The film is based on the biography of the painter written by Ranjit Desai. It is a fascinating story about a man who had to fight moral policing and censorship in the late 1800’s.

Nandana Sen essays the part of Sugandha, Varma’s muse in the film. She falls in love with him and seduces him into a relationship. The biopic could have made for an explosive film but falls short because of Mehta’s boring narrative.
