A video of a traditional Chinese martial arts performance overlaid with a background score of AR Rahman's Jai Ho is viral on social media with false claims that Chinese artists danced on the Slumdog Millionaire song.
The 45 second long clip has numerous artists showcasing coordinated martial arts moves and eventually forming a Chinese flag, through their performance. The footage has been captioned as, ‘Jai Ho song of Slumdog Millionaire, so beautifully choreographed by Chinese artists’.
The same video is viral on Facebook with a similar narrative.
Fact Check
BOOM broke the video into its key frames and ran a reverse image search. We were directed to the same video which was uploaded to YouTube as part of the Spring Festival Gala, 2019.
The video has been described as a performance by a martial arts school, Henan Shaolin Tagou Martial Arts School. Titled The Soul of Shaolin, the act features traditional Chinese martial arts and the team, mainly composed of teenage boys. The original video has a traditional Chinese song playing in the background along with kiai from the artists. Kiai is the short shout uttered during performing an attacking move.
The Spring Festival Gala celebrates the Chinese new year and is one of the most watched television shows in China. It was broadcast in CCTV, Chinese Central Television and was uploaded to YouTube by CGTN (Chinese Global television network) on February 4.
