A Facebook post carrying a photo of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a false quote stating she'll commit suicide if Narendra Modi becomes prime minister again, has gone viral.
A user called Awadh Bihari Verma had posted the photo on May 23, 2019, the day the Lok Sabha election results were announced.
Since then, it has been shared around 50 times and has received 100 comments at the time of writing this article.
The photo was shared with the following caption:
Original Hindi Text | English translation |
आज तो शुभ मुहूर्त है। आज ही आत्म हत्या कर लो ममता बानो। किसी ने कहा है कि "शुभ कार्य" में देर नहीं। | Today's an auspicious day. Kill yourself today Mamata Bano. No one said you should delay 'good work'. |
BOOM did a quick search with the caption on Facebook and Twitter, and found the following posts circulating on the two platforms.
Fact Check
BOOM reached out a TMC spokesperson for a comment, and the article will be updated if and when there is a response.
In order to look for a credible news report to back up the claim in the photo, BOOM did a quick Google search with the keywords "Mamata Banerjee" and "suicide".
Several news reports appeared in the results, which were either discussing a quote by Banerjee saying "Adolf Hitler would have committed suicide if he witnessed Modi’s activities" and a report about a death-by-suicide of a retired IPS officer who had blamed Mamata Banerjee for his death.
BOOM also did a Google search with the Bengali words "মমতা ব্যানার্জী" (Mamata Banerjee) and "আত্মহত্যা" (suicide), but none of the search results pointed towards Banerjee giving out such a statement.
BOOM could not find a single result that would suggest that Banerjee had said that she would commit suicide upon the reelection of Narendra Modi as prime minister.
