A photo of Kanhaiya Kumar, former president of Jawharlal Nehru University's (JNU) student union striking an animated pose with a map in the background that shows Kashmir as a part of Pakistan, is photoshopped.
The Urdu text on the top right hand corner of the map translates to, "The future map of India that we want."
The fake image has been posted on Facebook and Twitter in the past few days.
The photoshopped image is going viral with a message in Hindi which translates to, "Friends, don't look at Kanhaiya...look carefully at the map of India behind him...and then some people say Kanhaiya is innocent. "(Translated from Hindi text दोस्तों कन्हैया को न देखिये...इसके पीछे लगे हुये भारतवर्ष के मानचित्र को गौर से देखिये....और कुछ लोग कहते है कि कन्हैया मासूम है निर्दोष है).
Shared from the Facebook profile of one Jeeten Rout, this old fake image has picked up shares after February 23. The archived version of the post can be accessed here.
Fact Check
BOOM did two reverse image searches - one on the photograph of Kanhaiya Kumar with the map in the background and another on a snipped clip of the map. We got two different sets of pictures.
Several links carried news reports with the same image of Kanhaiya sans the map.
A reverse image search on a clipped portion of the map led us to the same image, albeit without Kanhaiya Kumar in the foreground.
Thus, the post that has gone viral with the claim that Kanhaiya Kumar is standing in front of a map portraying Kashmir as a part of Pakistan, is a composite of two different images.
