Claim
A video purporting to show India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru admitting in an interview that he did not participate in the country's fight for independence from the British, is doctored and fake. The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption when translated to English reads, "Rare Video, "I wasn't involved in the fight for freedom at all but I opposed it*, This is the same Nehru who has been propagated in a planned way that he has played an *important role* in giving freedom to the country." Fact
BOOM found that the viral video has been doctored by altering the audio. The word 'Jinnah' has been replaced with the word 'I'. In the original video Jawaharlal Nehru was talking about Pakistan's founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Additionally, a fake transcript has also been added to the video to support the false claim. A Google reverse image search with key-frames from video showed the original interview was uploaded on Prasar Bharati's official YouTube channel. The interview was uploaded on May 14, 2019, and shows Nehru speaking to US TV host Arnold Michaels in May 1964. It aired in New York on May 18, 1964, just days before Nehru's death on May 27, 1964. BOOM had previously fact-checked the same video in June 2024, when it was being shared with the false claim.
