Claim
A video showing a man attacking a police personnel has resurfaced with a false claim that it shows Trinamool Congress MLA Mohammad Dimir assaulting an on-duty officer in West Bengal. The claim has been debunked multiple times by BOOM, as we found that the video has no connection to West Bengal. Social media users have recently shared the video with the caption, "Absolutely outrageous! TMC MLA Mohammad Dimir is seen physically assaulting a police officer on duty — and the Mamata Banerjee government is doing NOTHING about it! Is this the kind of jungle raj Bengal has been reduced to? Where MLAs behave like goons and law enforcement is left helpless? Shameful and terrifying!". One such post can be seen here.
Fact
BOOM had published a fact check about the video when it went viral in 2019 with another false claim. We then found that the person beating the police official in the video was Manish Kumar, a BJP councilor from Meerut. The incident was also reported in the media, including The Times of India and India TV. According to these reports, the viral video was recorded at a restaurant owned by the councilor. The argument reportedly began following a dispute between the police personnel and a staff member at the restaurant. The cop was accompanied by a woman lawyer at the time. After the brawl, the BJP councilor was booked under Sections 395 and 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
