Defence officials said one shed at the ammunition depot caught fire. Around 19 security personnel were injured in the fire that spread to a number of sheds that houses ammunitions, bombs and other explosives. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is being established to look into the cause of the fire.
Some villagers reported damage to their houses after the explosion but they returned home after the fire was brought under control.
The central ammunition depot in Pulgaon, which is 110 kilometres from Nagpur, is one of India’s biggest arms depots. It had recently won an award for using solar energy to dispose off expired ammunition.
