Gangs of youths fought heavily armed squads of police near fan zones. Riot police used batons, tear gas and water canons to control the crowds. Soccer fans flocked to the Paris landmark Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower after France’s extra-time loss.

France were the match favourites but were held goalless by Portugal, despite Christiano Ronaldo’s injury. Portugal scored in the 109th minute to win the Euro 2016 final.
