Hong Kong Holds Protests Ahead Of Tiananmen Anniversary

By - A Staff Writer | 30 May 2016 3:41 PM IST

Hundreds of demonstrators marched in Hong Kong to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the Chinese government’s brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square. Hong Kong's pan-democratic leaders such as legislator Lee Cheuk-yan, are calling for vindication of Tiananmen Square crackdown and an end to one-party rule in China.

Dozens of pro-Beijing supporters, shouted abuse at the protesters claiming they were exaggerating the version of events.

Hong Kong, which returned to China after British-rule, under a deal to preserve wide-ranging freedoms, is the only city on Chinese soil where commemorations of June 4 are tolerated. Tiananmen Square is remembered for 1989 massacre of unarmed civilians as Chinese troops with rifles and tanks killed those protesting inflation, limited career prospects, and corruption of Communist party elite.
