Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia on International Worker's Day. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a Rs 8,000 crore scheme LPG scheme for BPL families, a part of which will be funded by the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily giving up their subsidies as per PM Modi's 'Give It Up' initiative. We ask the people of Mumbai whether the 'Give It Up' scheme is an initiative in the right direction.
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a scheme by NDA government aims to provide 5 crore free cooking (LPG) connections to below-poverty-line families over next 3 years.
Currently consumers are entitled to 12 subsidised LPG cylinders per year. The government proposes to provide gas connections to 1.5 crore below poverty line (BPL) households free of cost this year. So far around 1 crore people have voluntarily surrendered their LPG subsidy. The benefit of this would be transmitted to 5 crore below poverty line BPL families in the next 3 years.
The number of households giving up the subsidy forms 6% of the total registered LPG consumer base. The Central Government's task this year is expected to be made simpler as the number of surrendered subsidy covers two-thirds of this target.
