Kashmiri Pandits held a protest demonstration outside the Raj Bhavan in Jammu on January 19, as they marked the 25the anniversary of the day in 1990 when they left the Kashmir Valley in droves. According to author and Kashmiri pandit Rahul Pandita, close to 3,50,000 families left the Valley in the early nineties and most of them settled down in Jammu and other parts of the country. A few thousand Pandits who stayed back remained in camps or relocated to live together in the Valley. With militancy-related violence having declined over the last deacede, the central government announced a slew of measures, including government jobs, to facilitate the community’s return to the Valley. However, it has not been taken up.
