Multiple videos of a mock drill in Mumbai’s Jagruti Nagar and its surrounding areas are viral on social media from Monday onward with false claims that security forces thwarted some sort of a terror threat.
The videos document National Security Guard (NSG) commandos in uniform patrolling along with sniffer dogs, as stunned onlookers witness the scene.
Another set of videos features the commandos entering the Jagruti Nagar Metro Station in stealth.
However, interestingly traffic moves regularly, as do civilians, who record the incident.
The videos are viral on both Facebook and Twitter with the same narrative.
BOOM also received the same video and screenshots from the incident on its WhatsApp helpline number for verification.
BOOM could ascertain the video was a mock drill as there was neither restriction on civilians nor the movement of traffic was stalled.
A longer clip of the video was uploaded on Facebook with the caption "the force also carried out mock drills after intelligence has issued high alert across the country this Independence Day."
BOOM contacted Mumbai Police which declined to comment.
We found no evidence of the video being old.
BOOM spoke to officials of the Jagruti Nagar metro station who dismissed the speculation online.
"The mock drill was conducted as a routine exercise outside multiple metro stations before Independence Day. The videos are of the same. They were made viral with a misleading narrative. Request people to not fall for the same."
Furthermore, a source within the police confirmed to the Quint it was a mock drill.
