Men's Hockey Team Finish 2nd In Pool A

The Indian men's hockey team beat hosts Japan 5-3 in their final pool A match to finish second in the group behind Australia. A brace from Harmanpreet Singh and goals from Nilakanta Sharma, Gurjant Singh and Shamsher Singh were enough for India to get past the hosts. India will play the third-ranked team in pool B in the quarter-finals.

Avinash Sable Misses Steeplechase Final Berth Despite Breaking National Record

India's Avinash Sable missed out on a spot in the final of the men's 3000m steeplechase event even though he broke the National Record and posted a better time than three other opponents who qualified. Sable finished 7th in heat 2 and 13th overall with a timing of 8:18.12. He was quicker than the top three runners in heat three but with the race rules stipulating that the top 3 in each heat and the next 6 fastest advance overall to the final, Sable misses out.

Deepika Kumari Into Quarter-Finals

Deepika Kumari survived a tough round of 16 match which required a shoot off to clinch a spot in the quarter-finals. With the scores tied at 5-5 after five sets, Kumari shot a perfect 10 in the shoot off while her opponent, the Russian Olympic Committee's Ksenia Perova, only shot a 7. The World No 1 Kumari will next face the highly-rated An San who broke the Olympic record for highest points scored when she shot 680/720 in the qualification round.

The pistol shooting contingent's disappointing campaign ended without a medal after Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat failed to qualify for the finals of the women's 25m pistol shooting event.
