No, People From Amethi Did Not Cry While Meeting Rahul Gandhi Following His Loss

The viral post claims that the anguished people seen in the video had come all the way from Amethi to meet Rahul Gandhi in Delhi after the election results were declared

A 2017 video of Rahul Gandhi meeting kin of the victims of a boiler blast in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh is going viral on Facebook with a false claim.

The 20-second clip shows the Congress President comfort an old woman while being surrounded by anguished people.

The video is being shared with a false narrative that several people who travelled to Delhi from Amethi (Uttar Pradesh) to meet Gandhi broke down following his loss in the Lok Sabha elections.

In the biggest upset of the 2019 general election, Rahul Gandhi lost his own parliamentary seat in Amethi - considered a Gandhi family borough - to Bharatiya Janata Party's Smriti Irani. Gandhi who was contesting from two seats this election won from Wayanad in Kerala with a record margin.

The video is now viral from several Facebook pages. Its archived version can be accessed here andhere.

A caption with the video states, "people who had come to Delhi from Amethi to meet Rahul Gandhi broke down into tears. He has lost the election from Amethi due to the ideology of lies. But he hasn't lost the love of his people."

On the night of November 1, 2017, a boiler in National Thermal Power Corporation's (NTPC) Rae Bareli unit blew up killing as many as 26 people and injuring at least 200.
