There are three kinds of sprint categories: 100, 200, and 400 meter races. The 100-meter race is run on a straightaway and all runners must remain in their lanes. In the 200- and 400-meter runs, the races start from staggered lines to account for the curvature of the track.
In the relay, the incoming runner approaches ten meters before the exchange zone, both runners start to accelerate.

In the 20-meter exchange zone, the baton is exchanged between the two athletes. The event ends when a runner’s torso crosses the finish line.
