Four men, said to be tannery workers, were tied to a sport utility vehicle, stripped and flogged with sticks for allegedly skinning a dead cow in Gir-Somnath district last week. Members of the Dalit community staged protests in Amreli, Rajkot and Ahmedabad cities on July 19, which turned violent after the police intervention.
Rajkot and Ahmedabad cities observed shutdown as business establishments remained shut and residents preferred to stay indoors. Local media reported that seven persons of the community attempted suicide in protest against the incident.
In September last year, a 55-year-old man was lynched by a mob in Dadri, U.P. over rumours that he had stored beef in his house. Incident has sparked nationwide outrage amidst allegations of rising intolerance.
