South Sudan On The Brink Of War Again

By - A Staff Writer | 11 July 2016 5:59 PM IST

Military forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and first Vice-President Riek Machara are fighting each other in the streets of Juba. At least 272 people are dead and residents of Juba are fleeing the capital.

Relations between Kiir and Machar have been distrustful since South Sudan won independence from Sudan in 2011. U.S. has evacuated its embassy staff and other countries including India have announced their withdrawal too.

South Sudan had seen a respite from two years of violence in August 2015 after a truce between Kiir and Machar. South Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world and around 4.3 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian aid.
