StoreDot: Making 60-second Mobile Phone Charging A Reality

StoreDot has come up with battery technology which charges a smart-phone in less than a minute. And they are working on charging an electric car battery in less than five minutes. BOOM caught with Dr. Doron Myersdorf, the company's CEO in Tel Aviv.

StoreDot, an Israel-based startup, is developing a technology that charges a smartphone battery in 60 seconds and this technology is set to reach consumers in less than a year. StoreDot is working on fast-charging by changing the chemical composition of the battery. The new battery chemistry is using a feature called “nanodots” that has been derived from bio-organic material. These nanodots are used in both the electrode, which stores the battery’s energy, and the electrolyte, which transfers energy between the battery’s anode and cathode ends.

StoreDot says the electrical properties of these nanodots allow the electrode to charge much faster, while still discharging at a rate similar to conventional lithium-ion batteries. And because the technology is based on naturally occurring organic compounds, it’s supposedly cheap to produce.

Dr. Doron Myersdorf says they started working on this idea as, "There has to be an another solution for devices that are being used 24x7. Increasing capacity is one way but fast-charging means that we are working for a green-solution. There is less electricity being consumed and we are trying to eliminate the polluting chemicals that are used in the making of existing phone batteries".

Taking their green-mantra further, Dr. Myersdorf's company is also working on creating LCD screens using organic compounds which is able to produce visual quality equivalent to that of an OLED screen. This project is still in the trial phase and hence the timeline for its release is not available.

Apart from mobile phone batteries and a green LCD-screen, StoreDot is working on charging electric car batteries under five-minutes. This technology could be with consumers in another 18-months. And if the rumours are true, swappable car batteries combined with fast-charging could be a viable alternative to fossil-fuel guzzling conventional cars in the not too distant future.
