A message circulating on WhatsApp and other social media claiming the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has frozen all accounts of Punjab National Bank with immediate effect, is fake. A source within the RBI confirmed to BOOM that the message was fake.
The spurious message also claims cash withdrawals of only Rs. 3000 will be permitted and urges people to reject any cheques of the bank. But the message does not explain how any withdrawal of cash is possible if the account is frozen. A spokesperson for the bank was not immediately reachable.
Below is the text of the message.
"RBI freezes Punjab National bank all accounts till further notice with immediate effect. Cash withdrawal only Rs. 3000/-*Plz don't accept any cheque of punjab national bank* forwarded as received"
The message has been copied by some from WhatsApp and is now being shared on Facebook.
Punjab National Bank is at the epicenter of massive fraud linked to billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi.
