With West Indies players walking out of the recent Indian tour, the Indian cricket board invited Sri Lanka to play a 5-match one-day interational (ODI) series from November 1.
"The results of the series do matter," says cricket expert Ayaz Memon on Boom News's show #Cricket-O-Mania.
"The time is right to boost the confidence of the team since winning has to be a habit," Memon added.
With Indian captain M S Dhoni not playing for the first part of the Sri Lanka series, Virat Kohli will be leading the Indian tea.
"Some other players may be tested during this series. Are young players like (Sanju) Samson and (Kuldeep) Yadav likely to be given the chance now? This tour may help selectors make their choices," Memon said.
Kolkata-based sports journalist Debasish Dutta said Dhoni should be rested for the full series.
"The sad part is that India will be playing a test series against Australia just before the World Cup. Better planning could have avoided the situation," Dutta said.
Memon said broadcasters have pumped in big money to boost sports, and events will have to be worked around their demands. "It is happening in every sport."
He added that while a senior Sri Lanka player like Kumar Sangakkara objected to the series since their practice is being affected, "England wanted to send their team here for practice."
He added that the tri-series between India, Australia and England between January and February could turn out to be the preparatory series for the World Cup.
