Asaduddin Owaisi, born on May 13, 1969, in Hyderabad, Telangana, is an Indian politician and the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). He has been a Member of Parliament representing the Hyderabad constituency in the Lok Sabha since 2004. Known for his articulate speeches and strong advocacy for the rights of Muslims and other marginalized communities, Owaisi has emerged as a prominent figure in Indian politics, particularly in Telangana and other states with significant Muslim populations.
Owaisi's political career is rooted in Hyderabad, where his family has had a long-standing political influence through AIMIM. As a parliamentarian, he has consistently raised issues related to social justice, minority rights, and secularism, often taking strong positions on matters such as citizenship laws, communal violence, and government policies affecting minorities. He is known for his sharp debates in Parliament and his outspoken views on sensitive issues, making him both a celebrated and controversial figure in Indian politics.
Owaisi has been working to expand AIMIM’s influence beyond Hyderabad, contesting elections in states like Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. His party aims to represent not just Muslims but also Dalits, backward classes, and other underprivileged communities, focusing on welfare, education, and social justice.
In December 2020, BOOM fact-checked a viral image that showed Owaisi with Smriti Irani, claiming it was related to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls.
BOOM found out that the image was actually from a 2016 meeting with powerloom industry stakeholders and was being falsely linked to the elections, debunking the misleading narrative.
