The Delhi Police is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and ensuring public safety in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. Established in 1861 during the British Raj, Delhi Police has evolved into one of the largest metropolitan police forces in India. Uniquely, it operates directly under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the central government, rather than the Delhi Government, which differentiates it from other state police forces.
Headquartered at the Police Bhawan in New Delhi, the Delhi Police is led by the Commissioner of Police (CP). It is divided into various specialized units, including the Crime Branch, Special Cell, Traffic Police, and the Cyber Crime Unit, tackling issues ranging from terrorism and organized crime to traffic management and cyber threats. Delhi Police is responsible for major events, such as the Republic Day Parade, Independence Day celebrations, and security during diplomatic visits.
In recent years, the Delhi Police has focused on modernization, incorporating tech-based initiatives like GPS-equipped PCR Vans, e-FIR systems, and the Himmat App for women’s safety. The force also emphasizes community engagement and preventive policing to enhance trust and collaboration with Delhi's residents.
