The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is a law enforcement agency and economic intelligence agency responsible for enforcing economic laws. The organization’s primary purpose includes the enforcement of two key Acts - the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The ED operates under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
Recently, the ED has been involved in several high profile cases. One of them is the National Herald case involving Congress leaders, where the ED conducted raids and sealed the Young Indian office. Another notable case is the alleged illegal sand mining case linked to a former Punjab Chief Minister’s nephew. Currently, the ED is also involved in an ongoing investigation related to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This case pertains to alleged irregularities and money laundering in the Delhi Excise Policy. AAP leaders, including CM Arvind Kejriwal are facing judicial proceedings related to this case.
