Face Masks

A face mask is a protective covering worn over the nose and mouth, primarily used to prevent the spread of airborne infections, pollutants, and allergens. Face masks became widely recognized during the COVID-19 pandemic as an essential measure to limit virus transmission. They come in various forms, including surgical masks, N95 respirators, and cloth masks, each offering different levels of filtration, breathability, and reusability.

While masks are effective in reducing the risk of infection, their use has also sparked debates and misinformation regarding their efficacy, safety, and the need for mandatory mask-wearing in public spaces. Beyond the pandemic, face masks continue to be used in healthcare settings, construction, and high-pollution areas to provide protection and improve overall health outcomes.

In June 2020, BOOM fact-checked a viral claim alleging that Delhi Public School (DPS) was selling face masks to students for Rs 400 each. The claim created outrage among parents and the public.

BOOM reached out to a DPS board member in Bangalore, as well as school authorities in Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, who all refuted the claim, confirming that no such sales had taken place.
