Haryana

Haryana is a state in northern India, carved out of Punjab in 1966. It is known for its rich agricultural lands, significant industrial centers, and vibrant culture. The state has a predominantly agrarian economy, with crops like wheat, rice, and sugarcane contributing to its agricultural output. In addition, Haryana has become an industrial and corporate hub, especially in cities like Gurugram and Faridabad, which host major multinational corporations, IT parks, and manufacturing industries.

Politically, Haryana has been governed by parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in recent years. The BJP and JJP formed a coalition government in 2019, with Manohar Lal Khattar serving as the Chief Minister. Haryana's politics often revolve around issues such as agriculture, water disputes, industrial development, and social welfare, with a particular focus on rural upliftment and employment.

Haryana’s political landscape has been influenced by caste dynamics, primarily involving communities like Jats, Yadavs, and Dalits, impacting electoral outcomes. The state has seen various political movements, including demands for reservation in jobs and education, and has also been a focal point during nationwide events like the Farmers’ Protests (2020-2021) against the now-repealed farm laws.

In September 2024, BOOM fact-checked a viral opinion poll graphic suggesting a lead for the Congress in the Haryana elections.

BOOM found that the graphic was fake and no such poll had been published by Republic TV-Matrize, debunking the misleading claim and clarifying the false information circulating on social media.
