Mohamed Muizzu, born on June 15, 1978, is the current President of Maldives. He holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Leeds and has previously served as the Minister of Housing and Environment. Muizzu joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and held roles including vice-president and head of the Elections Department. In 2021, he was elected as the Mayor of Malé. He became the President of Maldives on November 17, 2023.
The diplomatic conflict between India and the Maldives stemmed from a social media dispute following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep in January 2024. President Mohamed Muizzu is perceived as pro-China, and had previously supported the 'India Out' campaign during Maldives elections.
