Myanmar Coup refers to the military takeover that occurred on February 1, 2021, in Myanmar, a Southeast Asian nation also known as Burma. The coup was carried out by the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's military, which arrested the country's elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, and other members of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) just hours before the newly elected parliament was set to convene. The military justified the coup by alleging widespread voter fraud in the November 2020 general elections, which the NLD had won by a landslide. However, these claims of electoral fraud were widely disputed and lacked credible evidence.
The coup marked the end of Myanmar's decade-long experiment with quasi-democracy, during which the military had retained significant power despite a civilian-led government. Following the coup, the military declared a state of emergency for one year, which was later extended, and took control of all branches of government.
The coup sparked massive protests across the country, with hundreds of thousands of people participating in demonstrations, strikes, and acts of civil disobedience. The military responded with brutal crackdowns, resulting in the deaths of over a thousand civilians, arrests of thousands more, and widespread human rights abuses. The situation in Myanmar has drawn international condemnation, with many countries and organizations calling for the restoration of democracy and the release of political prisoners.
The coup has plunged Myanmar into a deep political and humanitarian crisis, with ongoing conflict between the military and various ethnic armed groups, as well as a growing resistance movement. The situation has also exacerbated existing issues, such as ethnic tensions, displacement, and economic instability, leading to a deteriorating situation for millions of people in the country.
