Shehla Rashid, born on June 19, 1988, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, is an Indian human rights activist, and former student leader. Rashid gained national attention as the Vice President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) in 2015, becoming a prominent figure in student politics and advocacy for human rights. Known for her vocal stance on issues like Kashmir's autonomy, women’s rights, and social justice, Rashid has frequently engaged in public debates and protests, making her a significant voice in Indian activism.
Rashid is also associated with the Jammu and Kashmir People's Movement (JKPM), a political party she briefly joined in 2019 before stepping back from formal politics. Her activism has focused on addressing issues of state repression, communal violence, and digital rights, particularly in the context of Jammu and Kashmir. Rashid has been a staunch critic of the central government's policies in Kashmir, especially after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, advocating for dialogue, peace, and human rights in the region.
In November 2019, BOOM fact-checked a viral image related to the JNU fee hike protests, which falsely depicted Rashid wearing a sari with a crescent moon and star on it.
BOOM found out that the original image showed Rashid in a plain green sari, with no crescent or star, debunking the manipulated image and clarifying the misleading narrative.
