6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks China; 46 Killed, 50,000 Displaced
An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale rocked southwestern China on Monday. Houses were damaged and electricity cutoff in a remote region after the violent tremors.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake hit about 43 kilometres southeast of the city of Kangding in Sichuan province at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Several aftershocks were reported after the earthquake. The USGS said that an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 tremor hit eastern Tibet less than an hour after the initial quake.
AFP quoted locals residents of Chengdu saying that the tremors shook buildings in the area where millions are confined to their homes under a strict Covid lockdown. Videos on social media showed people not being allowed to move out of the buildings due to the lockdown.
Over 50,000 people have been relocated to safer locations after the devastating earthquake.
