Sir Ernest Shackleton's Ship Endurance Found Off Antarctica Coast 107 Years After Sinking
The shipwreck of Endurance, which sank in 1915 during Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctica expedition, has been found in the Weddell Sea.
Called the world's most challenging shipwreck search, Endurance was found 3,008 metres below the surface in the Weddell Sea in ear perfect condition.
"This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen. It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation. This is a milestone in polar history," said Mensun Bound, the expedition's director of exploration.
The Endurance 22 which found the Endurance, said that the ship was preserved by the freezing waters and the absence of wood-eating organisms.
In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton attempted to cross Antarctica via the South Pole which would have been a first attempt to do so.
However, his ship the Endurance got stuck in polar pack ice in January 1915. Shackleton ordered the ship to be abandoned and it sank in November 1915. Shackleton and his group survived the ordeal.
