Team India Taking The Knee In Support Of BLM Draws Mixed Reactions
Team India took the knee before their first 2021 ICC T20 World Cup match in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. However, the gesture drew mixed reactions in India.
Twitter users drew attention to the fact that Indian cricketers have not spoke up about attacks against Dalits and Muslims in India. The move was called hypocritical considering former West Indian captain Daren Sammy had accused Indian players of racially abusing him when he played in the IPL.
Some users who were felt the gesture was unnecessary said that the cricket team does not represent India and therefore do not speak for Indians.
After their loss to Pakistan, bowler Mohammed Shami received hate messages on Instagram. Users called out the silence of his teammates just hours after taking the knee against racism.
