Mulayam Singh Yadav, Founder And Leader Of Samajwadi Party Dies At 82
Former three times Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav died on Monday. He was 82.
His political career started off by joining Ram Manohar Lohia’s rights of farmer movement.
Yadav was first elected as an MLA from Samyukta Socialist Party in 1967 where he contested from Jaswantnagar.
He first became the Uttar Pradesh chief minister as a Janata Dal MLA, winning the top seat in 1989.
He founded the Samajwadi Party after separating from the Janata Dal in 1992. He became the chief minister for the second time in 1993.
Mulayam Singh Yadav became the chief minister for the third time in 2003 after the fall of the then-Bahujan Samaj Party under Mayawati.
Yadav also served as the union defence minister under the cabinet of HD Devegowda and I.K. Gujral. He was also arrested in 1975 during the Emergency declared by then prime minister Indira Gandhi.
