Bezos To Remain Executive Chairperson Of Amazon Board
In an email to Amazon employees, Jeff Bezos announced that he will be stepping down from his position as CEO and becoming the Executive Chair of the Amazon Board.
Amazon's Origins
Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 in Seattle as an online bookstore. Over the years Bezos has transformed Amazon into one of the largest companies in world with its presence in e-commerce, entertainment, cloud computing and electronics.
World's Richest Person
In 2018, Bezos became the world's first centibillionaire when his wealth crossed $100 billion and in 2020, he also became the first person whose wealth exceeded $200 billion.
Blue Origin And Washington Post
Bezos is the founder of Blue Origin, an aerospace company. In 2013, he purchased the Washington Post newspaper for $250 million.
Expanding Amazon In India
With the Chinese Alibaba group emerging as competition for Amazon, Bezos has focused on expanding Amazon's operations in India over the years.
Separation With MacKenzie Scott
In 2019, Bezos and his wife of 26 years MacKenzie Scott announced their separation. MacKenzie was Amazon's first employee and had a key role in building the company. As part of their divorce, Bezos kept 75% of the couple's stock in Amazon while Mackenzie kept the rest.
Bezos' Public Image
Bezos has been criticized for his anti-union stance and for not compensating his employees fairly. Amazon has been accused of spying on its employees and also forcing them to work in inhuman conditions at Amazon warehouses.
Andy Jassy To Take Over As Amazon CEO
Bezos has announced that Andy Jassy will take over as Amazon CEO when he steps down. Jassy has been the chief executive of Amazon Web Services, Amazon's cloud computing business.
