India Protests After Pro-Khalistani Extremists Burn Modi's Effigy In Vancouver
India on Thursday lodged a strong protest after pro-Khalistani extremists held a 'citizens court' in front of its consulate in Vancouver and burned an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Through a diplomatic note, India expressed its strong objection to the Canadian high commission, criticising the Justin Trudeau government for allowing Khalistanis to operate freely.
This diplomatic action follows a 'moment of silence' observed by the Canadian parliament in memory of Khalistan Tiger Force member Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18 last year, sparking protests and demonstrations in his support.
Last year, Trudeau alleged in the Canadian parliament that Indian agents were involved in Nijjar's killing, exacerbating tensions between the two countries.
Last month, external affairs minister S Jaishankar had said the government gave names of 25 persons for extradition but there had been no response from Trudeau's government.
