Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation Ahead of Fall Election
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he will resign as Canada’s leader and Liberal Party head once a new leader is chosen.
Trudeau expressed regret over failing to reform Canada’s election process, with a general election expected this fall.
After 11 years as Liberal Party leader and nine as prime minister, Trudeau faced growing challenges, including tariff threats, ally resignations, and poor polls. His resignation is seen as a preemptive move ahead of an election he is expected to lose.
Trudeau led the Liberals to victory in 2015 with promises of “sunny ways” and progressive policies. However, his later years saw rising economic discontent.
The Liberal Party’s national executive is set to meet this week to discuss leadership changes, with Parliament suspended until March 24 to ensure a smooth transition.
Trudeau, elected three times, last won in 2021 but lost his governing majority. Meanwhile, Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives hold a 20% lead in polls.
