Kanchanjunga Express Tragedy: Major Train Accidents In India Over the Last Decade
At least nine people lost their lives, and 25 others were injured after the Kanchanjunga Express collided with a container freight train near West Bengal's New Jalpaiguri on Monday morning.
Over the past decade, India has experienced numerous train accidents caused by a variety of factors, including mechanical failures and human error.
A triple-train collision on June 2, 2023, in Balasore, Odisha, led to one of India's worst railway accidents, killing at least 293 people. The Chennai-bound Coromandel Express entered the loop line and crashed into a stationary goods train. The CRS report cited "lapses at multiple levels".
On January 13, 2022, 10 passengers were killed and more than 40 injured after 12 coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express derailed in the Domohani area of West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, due to the “failure of equipment (locomotive)”.
On May 8, 2020, an empty freight train from Cherlapally to Panewadi accidentally ran over 16 workers sleeping on the tracks. The loco pilot saw them but couldn't stop in time.
Seven people died and several others were injured when a rail fracture caused the derailment of the Delhi-bound Seemanchal Express in Bihar's Vaishali district on February 3, 2019. Wear and tear and lack of maintenance were cited as the reasons for the same.
On January 21, 2017, the Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Hirakhand Express derailed at Kuneru station in Andhra Pradesh, killing 40 and injuring over 50. The final report is still pending.
