OpenAI Responds To New York Times Lawsuit, Defends Position On Copyright Allegations
OpenAI, the AI startup behind ChatGPT, has responded to The New York Times' recently filed lawsuit on copyright infringement with a statement.
In December, The New York Times initiated legal action against Microsoft and OpenAI, asserting claims of intellectual property infringement concerning the inclusion of its journalistic content in the training data of ChatGPT.
OpenAI wrote in a statement that the startup disagreed with the Times’ lawsuit. It said, “We collaborate with news organisations and are creating new opportunities. Training is fair use, but we provide an opt-out because it’s the right thing to do.”
The company stated that they are actively addressing the rare bug of "regurgitation," which involves the unintentional reproduction of entire "memorised" segments from specific content or articles, and they are committed to minimising this occurrence.
According to OpenAI, the lawsuit came as a “surprise and disappointment” to them.
