UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak Under Fire After Wife Akshata Murty's "Non-Dom" Status Revealed
UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak is under pressure after it was revealed that his wife, Akshata Murty, avoided paying £20 million in taxes due to her status as a non-domiciled.
The revelations come after the UK government increased taxes which Labour leader Kier Starmer accusing Sunak of "breathtaking hypocrisy" for raising cost of living while his wife paid less tax.
Akshata Murty, daughter of Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy, reportedly owns a 0.91 per cent stake worth £690 million in the IT company. Reports state that Murty would have had to pay £20 million in taxes over seven years had she not been non-domiciled.
Sunak defended his wife stating that she has broken no law in choosing a tax arrangement which exempted her from paying tax on overseas income in the UK. Sunak added, "She loves her country like I love mine."
Sunak and PM Boris Johnson's office also denied claims that Murty's status as a "non-dom" was leaked by Johnson's office. Sunak is widely considered to be in the running to replace the beleaguered Johnson as PM should he be forced to step down.
