Shehbaz Sharif Is Pakistan's New PM: Self-Exile to Corruption Case, All You Need To Know About Him
Two days after Imran Khan was dismissed amid high drama, Shehbaz Sharif, brother of ex-PM Nawaz Sharif and the leader of opposition PML-N, was elected as the new prime minister of Pakistan.
Imran Khan was removed on Saturday after he lost the confidence vote the Assembly there. The Opposition had got 174 votes to oust Imran Khan. He has become the first PM of Pakistan to be removed by a no-confidence vote.
While Khan's PTI opposed Shehbaz's nomination, citing corruption cases against him, his nomination papers were accepted by the National Assembly Secretariat on Sunday.
Shehbaz and his two sons, Hamza Shehbaz and Suleman Shehbaz, are involved in a high-profile money laundering case.
In fact, Nawaz Sharif also faced corruption charges after his name appeared in Panama papers. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2018. He has been in London since then for medical treatment.
Shehbaz has served as the Chief Minister of Punjab. With his three terms, Shehbaz is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Punjab.
Shehbaz with his family spent eight years of self-exile in Saudi Arabia after the military coup in 1999. He returned to Pakistan in 2007.
Meanwhile, Khan's PTI termed Shehbaz's election as an insult. "A man who has one corruption case of 16 billion rupees and another corruption case of 8 billion rupees against him...for that person to be selected and elected as the Prime Minister, there cannot be a bigger insult to the country," the party said in a tweet.
