Since the beginning of the 21st century, six editions of the FIFA World Cup have been played so far, starting from 2002. Here's how the host nations performed in the tournament's history.
2002 FIFA World Cup - Japan & South Korea
Japan and South Korea co-hosted the first FIFA World Cup of the 21st century. Both the teams qualified for the knockout stages with Japan going to the Round of 16 while South Korea ended their campaign as the semi-finalists.
2006 FIFA World Cup - Germany
The hosts were one of the favourites to lift the coveted trophy but Die Mannschaft's campaign had a bitter end in the semi-finals as they lost to eventual champions Italy.
2010 FIFA World Cup - South Africa
The first African nation to host the tournament, the South Africans were unable to make it to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2010 with their campaign ending after the group stage.
2014 FIFA World Cup - Brazil
Brazil were one of the favourites to win the World Cup for a record-extending sixth time, but their tournament ended as a nightmare after getting hammered in their own backyard by eventual champions Germany 7-1 at Belo Horizonte.
2018 FIFA World Cup - Russia
The Russians had a dream campaign where they reached the Round of 16 and defeated Spain on penalties. But they were defeated by eventual finalists Croatia in the quarter-finals.
2022 FIFA World Cup - Qatar
In its 92-year-old history, Qatar became the first nation to lose the opening match of the FIFA World Cup. Their campaign ended at the group stage after defeats against Ecuador and Senegal.
