Old Video From Anti-CAA Protest In West Bengal Revived With False Claim

BOOM found that the video is from 2019, and shows an incident that happened during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in West Bengal.

Claim

An old video of mob vandalising a railway station in West Bengal, is being shared with the false and communal claim that it shows local Muslims on rampage inside the station angered by the sound of a train whistle disturbing their namaz (prayers). The video was posted on X with the caption, "Mahishashur railway station in murshidabad w.bengal being destroyed saying that sound of train whistle is disturbing their namaz. Enjoy & reap the fruits of Secularism."

Fact

BOOM found that the video is old dating back to 2019 and shows an incident that happened during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in West Bengal. We had previously debunked the same claim back in April 2022. In the video a signboard in Bangla stating 'Naopara Mahishashur' is visible. Taking a cue, we ran a Bangla keyword search and found a similar vandalism video on YouTube uploaded on December 14, 2019 and several news reports. BOOM had then reached out to Sagardighi police station's sub-inspector Priyotosh Sinha, who had then confirmed that the incident happened in 2019 during the anti-CAA protest in the area and that the viral claim is false.
