Fire At COVID-19 Hospital In Ahmedabad Kills 8
A fire broke out in a private hospital in Ahmedabad killing eight COVID-19 patients being treated in the ICU ward, reports PTI. The fire broke out at 3.30 am at the COVID-19 designated Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura. Close to 40 COVID-19 patients have been shifted to a civic hospital.
India's COVID-19 Death Toll Exceeds 40,000
India's COVID-19 death toll rose to 40,699 after 904 patients succumbed to the disease. The total case count inches towards the 20 lakh mark after 56,282 patients tested positive for COVID-19. Of the total case count of 19,64,536, the number of active cases is 5,95,501 while 13,28,336 patients have been cured or discharged so far.
Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam Tests Positive For COVID-19
Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam has been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19. In a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Balasubrahmanyam said that he had a cold, fever and mild chest congestion for two-three days following which he got himself tested. He has been admitted to MGM Healthcare hospital in Chennai on Wednesday.
MP CM Shivraj Chouhan Discharged From Hospital
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been discharged from the hospital after he recovered from COVID-19. He tested positive on July 25 and was admitted to Chirayu hospital in Bihar.
Rafael Nadal To Skip US Open Due To Pandemic
Defending US Open men's champion Rafael Nadal will skip the 2020 edition of the tournament scheduled to be held from 31 August due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Taking to Twitter, Nadal said, "The situation is very complicated worldwide, the COVID-19 cases are increasing, it looks like we still don’t have control of it" adding that this was a decision he never wanted to make. Women's World No 1 Ashleigh Barty and Australian compatriot Nick Kyrgios had earlier announced that they would also not be taking part in the tournament due to the pandemic.
UP Law Minister Tests Positive For COVID-19
Uttar Pradesh Law Minister Brajesh Pathak has tested positive for COVID-19, he announced in a tweet. Pathak said that after experiencing early symptoms of the disease, he got himself tested. Pathak is the second UP minister to test positive for COVID-19 after Minister of Technical Education Kamal Rani Varun died on August 2 due to the disease.

India's Total Case Count Crosses 19 Lakh
India reported 52,509 new COVID-19 cases as the total case count rose to 19,08,254. The number of active cases stands at 5,86,244 while 12,82,215 patients have been cured or discharged so far. 857 patients died due to the disease as the death toll rose to 39,795.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Tests Positive For COVID-19
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced today that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Taking to Twitter, Pradhan, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Steel, said that he has been hospitalized and is doing well. Pradhan is one among many high-profile politicians to have tested positive for COVID-19 following Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

India's COVID-19 Testing Lower Than Other Countries: WHO Chief Scientist
WHO's Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan said India's COVID-19 testing rate is lower than countries like Germany, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan and added that fighting the coronavirus without adequate testing is like "fighting fire blindfolded", reports PTI. "Even the United States is testing a huge number of people. So we need to have some benchmark and every public health department needs to have benchmarks on what is the rate of testing per lakh or per million, what is the test positivity rate,” she said.
More Males Dying Due To COVID-19
From the 38,938 deaths in the country, males constitute 68 per cent of the deaths in the country. Half of the deaths from the country came from the age group of individuals who were 60 and older.
